Metronome Maker

A precise, sample-scheduled metronome: set tempo, time signature and subdivision, accent the downbeat, tap the tempo in, and watch the beat pulse. Web Audio, in your browser.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use

  1. Set the tempo with the slider or the nudge buttons, or tap the Tap button in time to find it.
  2. Choose a time signature and a subdivision so the clicks match the feel you need.
  3. Leave Accent the downbeat on to hear beat one stand out, or turn it off for an even pulse.
  4. Press Start. The beat dots light up in time and the audio is scheduled ahead for steady timing.

Examples

  • Tracking a 6/8 ballad, set 6/8 and a triplet subdivision so the lilt is easy to lock to.
  • Cutting a montage to picture, find the song tempo with Tap, then match your edit to the same BPM.
  • Rehearsing a tricky bar in 7/8, slow the tempo right down, keep the downbeat accent on, and bring it back up as it gets comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this steadier than a simple timer?

The clicks are scheduled on the Web Audio clock a fraction of a second ahead of time, rather than fired by ordinary page timers. That removes the jitter and drift you get from setInterval, so the pulse stays locked even under load.

What is a subdivision?

It is how each beat is split. Quarter plays one click per beat, eighth plays two, triplet three and sixteenth four. The extra clicks are quieter so the main beat still reads clearly.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap Start once to allow audio, then it runs like any metronome. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
