Tone Generator

Generate sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, white and pink noise or a sweep. Set frequency and level, play live or download a WAV.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use

  1. Pick a waveform, sine, square, triangle, saw, white or pink noise, or a sweep.
  2. Set the frequency and level, then press Play to hear it with a live oscilloscope.
  3. Keep the level low to start, sustained tones can damage hearing and speakers.
  4. Set a length and Download WAV to save the tone for tests, line-up or sound design.

Examples

  • A 1 kHz sine at a known level is the classic line-up tone for checking a signal chain or matching levels between rooms.
  • Pink noise is the standard for setting up and balancing speakers, since it carries equal energy per octave.
  • A 20 Hz to 20 kHz sweep quickly reveals resonances, rattles or rolloff in a room or a pair of headphones.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe for my speakers?

Sustained pure tones and loud noise put more stress on drivers than music does. Start quiet, raise the level gently, and avoid long bursts at high volume, especially low frequencies on small speakers.

What is the difference between white and pink noise?

White noise has equal energy per hertz so it sounds bright and hissy. Pink noise has equal energy per octave so it sounds fuller and more balanced, which is why it is used for speaker setup.

Does the download upload my audio?

No. The tone is synthesised and the WAV is encoded entirely in your browser, then saved straight to your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
