Codec Comparison
Compare delivery and edit codecs by quality, size and use case.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use
- Filter the table by use, edit, delivery or acquisition.
- Sort by data rate, quality or how edit-friendly each codec is.
- Export the comparison to CSV for your own notes.
Examples
- Pick ProRes 422 HQ or DNxHR HQX for a high-quality edit master.
- Choose H.265 or AV1 for small, efficient delivery and streaming files.
- Reach for a lightly compressed RAW or intra codec at acquisition for the most latitude.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between intra and Long-GOP?
Intraframe codecs like ProRes and DNxHR store every frame whole, so they cut on any frame and edit smoothly. Long-GOP codecs like H.264 store changes between frames to save space, which taxes the timeline.
How accurate are the data rates?
They are nominal figures at UHD 24p and scale with resolution and frame rate. Real files vary with content, so use them to compare codecs rather than as exact sizes.
Which codec should I edit in?
An intraframe edit codec such as ProRes or DNxHR gives the smoothest timeline. Transcode heavy delivery codecs to one of these before a big edit if your machine struggles.
