Softbox Comparison
Compare softbox shapes and sizes by spread and falloff.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use
- Pick a modifier shape and size.
- Set the distance to the subject.
- Read the relative softness and spread, and see the beam in the diagram.
Examples
- A large octa up close wraps the face with very soft, gentle shadows.
- A strip box stays narrow for controlled edge and rim light.
- Moving any source further away hardens its light and tightens the shadow edge.
Frequently asked questions
What makes light soft?
Apparent size at the subject. A bigger source, or moving it closer, makes the light softer with a gentler shadow edge. Distance shrinks the apparent size and hardens it.
Does shape matter?
Yes. Round and square sources give even wrap, while strips give a narrow, controllable beam and a distinctive catchlight, useful for edge and hair light.
Bigger softbox or closer softbox?
Both soften the light. Closer also falls off faster, so the background goes darker, while a bigger box at distance keeps more even coverage. Choose by the look you want.
