Motion
Animation Duration Calculator
Convert between frames, seconds and frame rate for precise timing.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use
- Choose your project frame rate.
- Enter a number of frames, or a duration in seconds.
- The other field updates instantly, along with the millisecond length.
- Use the timecode and per-frame figures to set keyframes and clip lengths precisely.
Examples
- At 24 fps a half-second move is exactly 12 frames, so a snappy title can be timed to land on a clean frame rather than a fractional one.
- At 30 fps, 45 frames is 1.5 seconds, a comfortable length for a lower-third to animate on and hold before leaving.
- Knowing one frame is about 41.7 ms at 24 fps lets you match a motion graphic to an audio hit down to the single frame.
Frequently asked questions
How do frames and seconds relate?
Seconds equal frames divided by the frame rate. So at 24 fps, 48 frames is two seconds. Change the frame rate and the same frame count plays for a different length of time.
Why time animation in frames?
Frames are the smallest unit your timeline can land on. Timing in frames keeps motion crisp and repeatable, and avoids keyframes drifting onto fractional positions that soften the action.
What about drop-frame rates like 29.97?
Fractional rates exist so broadcast timecode stays in step with real time. For animation timing the difference is tiny, so working at the whole-number rate and rounding frames is fine for most shots.
